Diamonds: The Masters of Light

Diamonds are prized for their unmatched brilliance, but what gives them that dazzling sparkle? It all comes down to three key optical properties:
Refraction – When light enters a diamond, it slows down and bends due to the stone’s high refractive index (2.42). This bending of light directs it through the stone and back out, creating that signature fire and brilliance.
Dispersion – Ever noticed the tiny flashes of rainbow colours in a diamond? This happens because diamonds break white light into its spectral colours, scattering blues, reds, and yellows in a mesmerising play of light.

Cut – A well-cut diamond maximises its ability to reflect light internally and externally, enhancing its sparkle. That’s why cut quality is one of the most important factors in a diamond’s beauty.
Fun Fact: The ideal diamond cut is designed mathematically to reflect nearly all the light that enters it, creating the iconic “fire and brilliance” effect.
Opals: Nature’s Living Light Show

Opals have an almost mystical glow, shifting colours as they move. This unique play of colour is due to a phenomenon called diffraction.
Tiny Silica Spheres – Opals are made up of microscopic silica spheres arranged in a precise pattern. As light passes through these spheres, it diffracts (bends and splits), creating shifting rainbow hues known as opalescence.
Angle Matters – Unlike diamonds, which sparkle due to their cut, an opal’s colour pattern changes depending on the angle of light. This is why no two opals ever look exactly the same!
Fun Fact: The most valuable opals display a full spectrum of colours, with deep blues, vibrant reds, and electric greens being the rarest.

Sapphires & Rubies – These gemstones owe their vibrant hues to trace elements—titanium and iron for blue sapphires, and chromium for red rubies.
